Anybody out there own a Fluval 404?

hey CW if you have any of them polishing filters you dont use let me know i always need them - rod

I hear you, If I cant find a use for them soon you have first dibs, Ill pack them up and have you email me a shipping label lol.

I had a thought and on occasion have had the need for an intake safe strainer for sick fish or fry, I was wondering if they would make a good intake strainer or intake filter lol. It certainly would be easy to remove and clean lol, maybe on the end of an AC HOB intake.

I have 2 404's on my 180 and I like them. Pretty silent and work ok.

Im actually looking forward to trying it out, I just hate playing musical chairs with new filters displace an older and they all shift locations based on need and size, why I have been procrastinated installing my FX5 on my 125 but I'm getting on that today.

i use a chunk of black filter foam i slide over the intake of all my filters. intakes sure will suck up baby brigg and giant ramshorn babies. or they get stuck in the slits in the intake filters and die.

I just got it today and was a little disappointed that for having been used only once (famous eBay line) according to the seller, it had serous screw driver pry marks all over where the canister lid and body join together. Somehow the seller never nicked the O-ring surface area. I cleaned and lubed everything that had sealing surfaces and it was clear the priming pump was bent so I had to straiten that out from the inside so that the priming plunger would seal as there was no way it would have worked. Fortunately the original impeller and ceramic magnet has been replaced with a composite metal one that new. Although the hoses were intact and complete with the original intake and out flow fittings, the hardware to attach it to the tank were missing. But turns out those generic heater mounts I bought on sale (suction cup with a tube holder) worked perfect to hold the hoses in position. That priming handle just wouldn’t work until I worked it up and down frantically, it was like boot camp all over again. But the water shot and flooded the inside canister "PTL" no leaks!

Well the ebay F404 has worked great for the fist 24 hours. No leaks and the outflow is better then I expected. I reviewed the Fluval 405 video CD on installation and maintenance and do you know I could not find one characteristic, feature or part that was different, even the impeller and magnet part numbers are the same which means the motors are the same. The only thing that is different is the tank attachment hardware for the same hoses and fittings which are slightly improved and user frienly thats it. So overall Im impressed with what you can get used compared to what it cost new which is essentially the same.

So much so I got weak and bought another good one on "Buy Now" for $35 LOL

CW STOP BUYING ALL THE GOOD DEALS ON EBAY !!!! THEY ARE MINE :) CW there is a difference in the 404 and 405 it is the impellor blade some have a straight shaped blade and some have a curved shaped blade make sure you look at the type you have before you order a replacement. and the plastic cover that snaps in and holds the impellor are also different depending on which shape of impellor blade you have but besides that i think everything else is pretty much the same. so those 2 parts you have to make sure you order the correct ones.

Please call me Gunner, my friends do. If you look on ebay for Fluval 405 impeller they say "404/405 strait blade", so the curve must be new, wonder if it fits lol. The funny part is that according to both manuals the pump output are identical 1300L or 340G and so are all the other specs on the table right down to the wattage on the motors, a prime indicator of power. Also if you go to the hagen website and look up the manuals in PDF on the parts list both "magnetic impeller" part numbers are identical A-20172. So whether curved or strait must be interchangable, also the exspoded parts list shows is labled 404/405 almost all parts interchnagable, just like when Hagen AquaCleal chnaged the names of the ACs from 500/110 300/70 exc, I think it was just a marketing ploy.

Funny you should compare the parts of the 404 and 405. I have 2 404 and 1 405. I got them with tanks that I bought off of CL. The parts are interchangable. I inadvertantly got them all mixed up when I first got the filters and took them all apart to clean them. They were disgusting. Anyway, my husband sat and put them all together. Trying to figure out which parts went to which and all the parts fit either one.

The difference is in dates the 404's were manufactured, earlier models had different size parts (mainly impeller parts) and the impeller blades were rounded and not straight, later models have the same parts to that of a 405. I've got the 2 404's that were produced closer to when the 405's were released, as well as junked 404 from an earlier manufactured date.

yes the date does matter

yes difference is 404 made before july 2001 have different impellor and impellor cover so you need to know which style you have. the older 404 impellor cover is clear plastic i have 1 of those 404's and 1 newer 404 thats what caught my attention about the difference in impellor styles and covers.
