i no i have posted about this before but can some one that has succesfully bred tetra , help me. as of right now i am going to get a10g over the weekend that i intend to use for breeding, because as of right now i am saving up for a significantly larger tank for my cichlids. but i really like the tropicals and i would like to attain a little street credit on breeding. so yes i have heard that breeding is difcult with tetras but i would like to accept that fact and try anyway. i currently have a school of 4 lemon tetras, 4 silvertip tetras, 4 neon tetras, 4 columbian tetras, and 5 black neon tetras, which would be the best to try with, and should i increase the numbers in that certain type of fish. whichever fish you reccomond could you walk me through waht i am supposed to do. if you could this would be very greatly appreciated.

Of all the different fish I have bred (over 200) I never did tetras. But I can tell you that you will probably spend more time & money trying to get any fry to saleable size than it is worth. Of those you name I would say the Lemons are the easiest. They do have to be placed in a prepared special tank (after conditioning) and then removed right after spawning or they will eat the eggs!

well i was just thinking of what fish i could breed with a barebottom with a sponge like most people tell me.

java moss, like frefloating, if its a barebottom how do you get the plants to stay and how many plants would i need for a 10g

I read in a book that you can use very large gravel on the bottom of a breeder tank, and when you put them in there after conditioning when they breed the eggs mostly fall in between the creacks of the rocks. The book also said marbles could be used the same way

I have bread a lot of tetras and I still breeding them. I thin you will need at least a 20 long for breeding. I would say to keep the tank as a bare bottom and to use java ferns on a good size pace of drift wood. To get them to grow fast to a good size about 1” you will need a large tank about 100 gallons at the smallest or a few 55 gallon tanks. I have found that most of my tetras will lay about 250 to 275 eggs at a time.

As far as selling them to a LFS most of the dealers are selling the more common ones for 15 to 25 cents each.

As far as using large gravel for the bottom of the tank, that’s a bit iffy. You might get away with glass marbles. You will get a better water flow for them but I think that’s more for your live barring fish.
