i would really like to get a 220 gallon tank for my cichlids (they are babies now)
but im not sure if my second floor floors can hold it. its not an old house, the house is 12 years old. anyone ever hear of horror stories of big tanks crashing through the floor? lol

I wouldn't do it on a normal stand...the more area used the better...maybe on top of a well built dresser or something..

Your talking 1 ton of weight being held...8 lbs per gallon plus gravel and stand.

A well built dresser is not going to hold a ton of weight.

I couldn't find the dimensions for a 220g, so I used that for a 210, which is 72x24x29.

Assuming 2" of substrate and .5" glass, it will weigh approximately 2260.23 #

Here's a link so you can do your own calculations:

So, in answer to your question, I wouldn't do that.

ya ur gonna have a lot of trouble with tat tank if its upstairs
its too much weight on the floors
once tat tank is filled up
ur gonna hear a lot of cracking
then ur tank is gonna fall down to the first floor then tat floor will be flooded
u better not risk it

72x24x30

That is impossible. :duh: A wooden floor sits on joyces. A joyce sits between 16 to 24 inchs apart apart from each other. Most joyces are 2"by6" or 2"by8". It can hold 5,000 pounds over three joyces, if the jocyes are 16 inchs apart. At 24inchs apart they can hold 3,000 pounds over three joyces. A gallon of water weights 8.33 pounds. Times that by 220 you get 1832.6.
That is just over three jocyes. The lenght of the tank could go farther then that.

bellum you gave me hope!
i measured the joysts and it was 16" and ran across the whole ceiling of the basement. theres also a big metal beam holding up the house lol actually theres 2 of them
even if my measuring is off (which it may be) its def between 16-18 inches
the room beneath this "fish tank" room is the kitchen. i just wouldnt want a family member poking through the refridgerator and be killed by a falling fishtank....but then again i really dont recall any stories like this in the news?

I know it seems like it well fall but it well not. That is if the jocyes in your home are in ok shape. Also you can cut short 2by6 boards. With 45degree angels and connect the jocyes togethere by putting 2 in between the jocyes to creat an x.(right under where your going to put the tank.)

Sorry but it is hard for me to describe.

ok i just want to make this part clear
the house is a typical 2 story home with a basement (full not crawl space)
so basically it will be basement, upstairs kitchen, second floor extra room (where tank will be)
:p:
