I recently purchased a small group of cardinal tetras. Within a few days they were covered with ich. I treated with API Super Ich treament and the next morning they were all dead I have heard they are quite fragile. Anyone have any luck?
Thank God they were in quarantine. I never risk having my 55g crash. The Super Ich treatment is malachite green. I usually treat with heat and salt but this case of ich came on so hard and fast I decided to try the chemical route.
I went to 3 LFS within 15 miles of my house and all three of there tanks with cardianls were covered with Ich. It was very odd to me but maybe they all got in a bad batch. My family has 25 cardinals in the living room tank
I had purchased the fish a few days apart. The first batch were great but when I added the next (new to the store) the ich hit within a day or so.
I had my filter running, no carbon. Dosing comes in premeasured packets. One per 10g, which I follwed. Active ingredients per packet are 3.6mg Malachite Green and 60mg Nitrofurazone.
What a shame! I would recommend using a qt tank for new purchases. For ich, I prefer heat and salt as it seems less stressful than some meds. I like to visit the LFS each week when I am planning fish purchases to see how healthy the stock is. I usually visit for a few weeks and then purchase so I can see if the fish are dying off, ill, or doing well in their tanks before I bring them home. Often they will tell you when the arrival date of the fish was too. My LFS actually writes this on the tank so you can see how long they have been there. If the fish had just arrived from the transhipper, they are already stressed and week. I prefer to buy them after they have gotten over this adjustment period.
