I just got an email from Petsmart saying that it's 25% off - so after tax would be $280. Seems like a good deal for a brand new 60 gallon tank with full hood, plus stand! It's very attractive, I like the style and the black silicone...

I know the added height might make maintenance a pain and does not optimize surface area...I wonder how much of a pain it makes owning one. If anyone has one, please post your experiences :)

I bought mine at Petsmart 2 years ago for $230 on holiday sale. I was in Petsmart 2 days ago and noticed the sale your talking about, Its a fair price for new and looks pretty sharp. The cabinet is only 24" high and the tank 24" so at 48" total height its not bad at all for reaching inside on foot.

The only problem with the setup is that the cabinet is made of all particle board and has a tendency to sag slightly. I have been meaning to drain and reinforce mine but so far its held up OK probubly cause I have it on carpet, but if you have hard floors that will allow it to slip and spread, I would definitely reenforce the inside with studs before I place a load on it. Just my recommendation.

looks very nice but its kinda pricey even on sale but im spoiled with all the tanks on craigslist in my area for dirt cheap. let us see it after you get it all set up!

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I was worried about the MDF stand as well. Fortunately I do have a friend who could do the reinforcing for me...I'm on the fence, though. I'd much rather have a 75 gallon tank for the depth, but the only way I could afford one is used, and the FW setups around here are generally not very attractive. Saltwater looks nice, everything matches and often times looks well cared for, but so much more $$ not to mention equipment I don't need.

I know what you mean. I could definitely find a used 55 gallon setup for less, and it would be almost the same functionality wise. In fact, I bought a 75 gallon tank with lights (came with two hoods but the plastic hinges were all broken, had to replace) and a nice metal stand for $75. But that was a hot bargain as far as things go around here.

If I wait, I'm sure I could eventually find a 75 gallon for $250-300 or so. I don't mean to be picky, but oak stands and black trim aquariums just don't match to me, or vice versa. Little things like that bug me.

Also many of the tanks I've gone to see are in far from ideal shape - obviously dry silicone (not worth the trouble of learning to reseal, IMO) from sitting empty on the porch for a year in Florida, chips from being moved a little carelessly, lots of deep scratches on the bottom of tempered glass...makes me a little nervous.

Maybe I could live with these defects if the price were to be reduced accordingly, but no one seems to ever believe me that yes, silicone can dry out and yes, deep scratches do make tempered glass more fragile! I can kind of understand, though. People spend $500 on a setup so they want to sell it for $300 and not a penny less.

No its the same exact stand, I was just leaving out the light-hood that they include in the measurement. I know what you mean about used set-ups looking awful and to date there hasn't been 1 used Craiglist deal I have bought that I did not refinish or refurbish to make it look new and match.

Like I said its a fair deal for new if you have to have new. Personally If I had to do it all over again Id never paid $236 for mine and would have waited-watched and bought CL / local add used In fact if you lived locally Id sell you mine which still looks and operates like new for $150 as it is too small a tank for my purposes anymore, Id even throw in the Oscar.

Oh ok, I see! You're right that a standard 60 gallon (according to this chart: http://alysta.com/books/fishtank.htm
which I refer to often) is 48 3/8"x 12 7/8" x 23 7/8"

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is picky! I just find it strange that most CL people don't seem to treat aquariums as a piece of decorative furniture. A crappy looking homemade canopy with visible brackets and a dull matte staining job is just not that attractive :yuck: A couple of weeks ago I went to see a 75 gallon tank and stand for $200 firm. Turns out it was an iguana habitat (although the glass was thick enough to be for aquariums) and it had chewed chunks out of the interior rim towards the back. When I mentioned it, she said "Oh, that - you won't even notice it when it's full of water" :screwy:
