does anyone know of anything that will eat diatoms in an african cichlid tank? preferably a bottom fedder. They are all over my white crushed coral that I use as substate and are quite unsightly.

Otos are the best diatoms eaters but they aren't suitable for an african tank. Not many bottom feeders do well in african tank but it really depends on your fish and how aggresive they are.
I would maybe try MTS snails as they stay in the gravel and clean it quite nicely.PLus they are cheap and you won't have to worry about them getting killed by the africans.

i dont know...my chinese algae eater ate diatoms, but i dont know if all of them do. If you got a larger one, you might be able to go with that.
CAE might eat diatoms too and i also have a bristllenose pleco that will eat it but since his problem is on the gravel i don't think they would help much.
I have a BN pleco in a tank with various other algae eaters(SAE,otos,Zebra snail,algae shrimp) but nothign was helping to keep the gravel from getting algae on it.They cleaned the algae form everythign else in the tank but i have never seen them clean the gravel. I got MTS and the problem started going away.
