Anyone know of a good web host?

I use Atlanta Virtual www.atlantavirtual.com

If you call them, ask for Alex and tell him Neil Blackwod sent you :) He hosts a lot of sites for us knifemakers. Great company, excellent customer service. He also builds sites, I'm probably going to have him upgrade mine and add a small forum soon.

I was going to suggest someone on this forum, but I always forget whom it was. Anyway, it was Tom Griffin... that is one deal that is amazing. I hope you get more money than that from people you don't know Tom? I mean this deal is just for members of forums you kind of know right? Otherwise it is a steal! :D

it's a steal.

I lease the space to offset the costs of leasing the server. But most of the server is empty. Very few takers. Maybe it is because I make no bones about the fact that i am not a professional hosting company, but rather just someone sharing a deal.

Its a great package though, and we are leasing a new server...super fast...lots of room...and it allows for the free domains now. So if you know anyone looking for space...send em over

/end shameless plug

Actually...I dont run the server here...I lease a dedicated server and then essentially sublet the space out. Its the same as most smaller hosting comapnies do...just I freely admit to it<G>...and charge far less. Like I said...really not into it for the money...

Tom --

Do you have physical 24/7 access to your server or do you lease a server in another part of the country? A co-worker was telling me there was an upstart company in my area that was leasing blade servers. You get 24/7 physical access to your server and are in charge of your own software support/updates. They manage hardware support if needed. My co-worker didnt know the yearly cost and it sparked my interest to find out.

If you dont mind me asking, could you PM a ballpark figure for leasing your server and what all is included in that price? If you dont care to share that info i understand.

Thanks,
Matt

Walrus, you can build a decent server for about $1500 - $2000. If you use Apache software, there's no cost for that. Your cable internet company should be able to offer you a T-1 connection for about and extra $35 a month. The only other big expense you'd be looking at would be a UPS.

That's not a bad deal. I've never checked into renting a server but I can't image it being less than $35 a month. Of course the cost of intial equipment would set you back but if you have a group of people that are willing to rent space from you before you get going, it won't hurt the pocket as much. :)

actually I would imagine if you looked hard enough you might find a smallish dedicated server for 35 a month...although a bit more than that is more like it...and I pay a good deal more but I want line speed (A T-1 is slower than my DSL connection here (usually around 2.6 mbps) and would slow considerably for a server with a goodnumber of people online at the same time...

The control panel software I use is called Plesk Reloaded....its a real smooth operating system and offers me control that would otherwise require me to learn the language of the shell/apache/red hat much more than I have time to learn...I have a 100 domain license for Plesk...come swith the server....that license were I to buy it is 399.00. to upgrade to an unlimited license makes it 799.00...I just dont have that kind of money and if I intend to get it back thru leasing gonna have to raise rates.

And no...I dont have 24/7 access to it physically, but I do have 24/7 access to the people who do and they have never failed me. The main thing is that if you screw somethign up and htey have to get in there and fix it it is big bucks...but thats the price of it all...extra charges can kill ya. Also...bandwidth allotments are to watch...my first dedicated server housed this site (AC) as well as my own and such...and we used about 130 gigs of bandwidth at that point...I was only allotted 50 per month...the rest were at 5 bucks a crack. Imagine what happened to my wallet...havent recovered from that yet. Now you can get between 500 and 1000 gigs a month included with the plans. Not bad....

For me leasing is THE only way to go. Walrus...PM forthcoming...its not bad...my server is a P4 3.04 gig processor...a gig of RAM...120 HD....500 gig bandwidth....the 100 domain Plesk license...and great service. You will be surprised at the price I think.
