I've been able to pet one of my Angels for quite some time now. He, or she, was a little skittish at first, but is now quite comfortable with my fingers stroking his crown and fins. I quite enjoy being able to do this. It gives me a little more of a "bond" with that fish.
I have another Angel in the same tank, and he, or she, is not up to letting me pet it, yet. I'm slowly working on it though. I have a Paradise fish in that same tank as well, and forget about petting him... he's off in a flash the moment he feels a finger.

Anyone else do this?

My puffers are always curiously buzzing around my hand whenever it's in the tank. They won't let me pet them though...

petting your fish is generally not considered a good thing to do.

My friend can pet his Tigar Oscar Cichlid that is 15inches long

I had mollies that would rub themselves on my hands and arms when I had my hands in the tank for cleaning or rearranging, etc. I never tried to actually pet them, but they were not shy at all, and I bet I could probably have pet them without a problem.

From what I understand, petting them can remove some of their protective slime coat and cause them to be more susceptible to disease. Whether or not it is actually true, I am not sure, but it's what I've heard.
