In the past I've always used reefsand from the LFS, until I found you guys! I cannot find any Southdown or Oldcastle anywhere here in southern CA, so I decided to take a trip to Home Depot and Lowe's. The only thing I found even close to looking useable was this:

Has anyone used this sand made by Quikrete? I don't mind if it does not buffer the pH. It is the consistency of sugar, but it does not specify whether it is silica-based or anything... are there any chemicals I should watch out for in sand that could be harmful to fish/inverts? 100lbs for $8 sure was a deal compared to CaribSea reef sand, so I hope I can use it.

I'm currently using that exact same product in all of my saltwater tanks. I've actually used that sand in all of my freshwater and saltwater tanks for the past 10 years. I'm currently using local sand/gravel in my freshwater tanks, but all of my saltwater tanks still and will continue to have the play sand. I personally have never had a problem with it.

Hi SaltFreek. I use Quickrete in all of my tanks. I can't find the other sand companies here in Colorado. It is silica based. I checked the Quickrete website. Go ahead and use it! :-)

I use it as well.....well, I should say, for the first time. I just set up my 55gal. tank, again. I checked all the fish stores...$40 for a 20lb bag of aragonite. No thank you!

I stopped at Home Depot for pvc pipe, and saw this stuff. It has worked wonderfully. The best part...I put it in the tank, filled with water...and no cloudiness. I was amazed. lol

I'm cycling the tank now, and it's going to house 1 Bimac Octopus.

Thank you all for your quick replies! I've added the sand, and so far so good. I can't believe it, $4 per 50lb bag! :dance

I guess the money saved will go towards a lighting upgrade :D
