Anyone with experience planting bulbs?

oh, it floats, hmmm.... mine dont float. I would definetely check it in a week to make sure it doesnt rot, maybe you can weigh it down between two rocks? I dont like lead weights, they tear up my plants, but maybe its called for in this circumstance.

Well no! no, no, no...it doesn't float, but I don't want the fish (cories, pleco or angels) moving it around the tank...

I have only done one (Dwarf Lilly). I was told to bury it half way leaving the sprouting side up. I did this and the first two weeks were pretty uneventful. Then I started to get a little growth. Finally now after 6 weeks it is starting to look like a real plant. I am tryin to grow it emergent. I think it is going to take 6 or 9 months to grow 18".

That's one reason why we float them for a while. Depending on the bulb, you can't always tell which end is which until it sprouts leaves or roots.

If you want to actually plant it, you can. Just only go half way up the bulb. What I do is place it where I want it to grow, bury the thing with sand/gravel, then lift it upward slightly so it's half exposed. If you have strong current or bull-dozing fish, add some rocks around it to hold it there.

For what it's worth, better plant sellers won't send you a bare bulb like that. If you don't get one with a plant growing already (which is fine).. at least you should receive a bulb with sprouts. Those sprouts will probably die off right away - but, this assures you the plant seller sent you an active, living bulb instead of a dead or dormant one. If the seller is dealing with bulbs that aren't actively sprouted already, that means they don't know or don't care if they're sending out dead bulbs or not. Not a good sign for future business.

Thought about that...let's just hope for the best!

i have a red lotus too, well lots of them. Mine did come with the plant on as i got mine from the lfs, i have planted my bulbs into the substrate and they seem to be doing well.

I would toss it in and let it sprout some leaves. It should look pretty nice in a couple of weeks. The planted ones in my tank seem ta have gained really big leaves, whereas the unplanted ones still have small leaves.

I will get you pics of mine soon as im about to go and tie some moss to the wood in that tank. :)

pic 1 is a baby in one of my tanks.
Pic 2 is planted in downstairs tank.
pic 3 unplanted in downstairs tank.

Please ignore the crap on the glass, apparently its something in the water it comes and goes. Wierd but does not seem to bother the fish. Bugs us more with numerous glass scrubs it still sticks to everything.
