Ok so my plan to buy my friends PC light failed, as he decided to keep it now......sheesh

oh well, life goes on........

Anyways, i found a Jebo 48" Power Compact Aquarium Light (Black) on Ebay which has a total of 220 watts. Its going for about 70-80 dollars Canadian. Thats dirt cheap for a unit such as this, is there anything wrong with these units that i should know?

Thanks.

That light doesn't have a fan from what I can see. Keep in mind you'll also need to replace the two actinic bulbs with something suited for plants, so you're looking at additional costs for that. My 192W fixture puts out a lot of heat. It has an aluminum housing which helps to dissipate heat, as well as a fan - if the Jebo has no fan, I imagine that much more heat will build up inside. I'm not saying it's a bad light, but I think that the more expensive lights have a higher price tag for a reason. If you get this light, I'd suggest docking mounts to raise it a few inches above the surface of the aquarium - you'll lose some of the light, but it will help keep the unit cool.
Here's a thread about this exact same topic :)
That thread links to this discussion on another forum, mainly concerning the 'actinic' bulbs.
Here's one more for good measure :D
The general consensus seems to be that they're not of the highest quality, they do get hot and the bulbs aren't fabulous, but they are a pretty good deal. I think when it comes to lighting, generally speaking you get what you pay for.

Here is my 66g that I finished planting today, under the Jebo white and blue 'actinic' By the way, the blue light that comes with it is not really 'true blue' actinic. It is a white bulb tinted blue, I was this when I showed it to my LFS who specialize in marine tanks. I use it with a 40 watt flurosescent that is in the red spectrum. I took this photo without my flurescent turned on so you can see it is bluish, but not awful to the eye. I think it gives a eerie look at night that I like. In the day, the blue is hardly noticeable. You can do away with the blue tubes if you so desire, but I'm not going to use them awhile before I put out $$ on new bulbs.

I have been running mine for 12 hours per day and it just gets warm to touch.
I wouldn't recommend it for a marine tank. I notice the plants rooting in a few days. I guess its not the 'best' but I find it just right for my needs.

Jan 22, is taken at night, Jan. 23 is taken in the daylight. See the difference?

Thanks Swimfins and Blinky. One quesion about ventilation, does it have ventilation vents on top that run across the whole light? If so, wouldnt that get rid of a lot of heat? Also, do you see any noticibale water temperature changes with the light?

The reason i ask is because the AH systems, also come with NO fans, and seem to work very well.

And, yes i can see the blue tint in the tank pics. Cant really tell during the day, but defanately can during the night. Nice set-up by the way

What you can do is raise the unit up on wooden blocks, put under the edges, if you want it higher. (or buy the little legs that hook onto the tank lip) I just rest mine on the glass top, and I don't notice a real drastic change in water temp, my thermometer is set to 78 and I see it kicking on regularly during the day even with the lights running.

I purchased a Jebo light on Ebay and am very unhappy. first of all you have to spend at least $50 to replace the actinic bulbs which drives the original price up to $150 when you factor in shipping from ebay. The bulbs you do get are of poor quality (Jebo bulbs). You are better of purchasing a freshwater strip light online which comes with 4 6700k bulbs at 65 watts. I have found such a unit with all coralife bulbs and fans for $199 (webaquatics). Like I always say if you are going to buy a cadilac you should get power windows.

Hey,

Thanks. I actually opted for a Coralife 65x4 light with built in fans, and two seperate switches, not to mention a solid alluminum casing. I payed 330 Canadian with taxes and shipping. The 4, 6700K, 65 watt bulbs also came with it, so a great deal imo. The cheapest ive seen them at LFS is around 450 plus taxes. I figured there was something wrong with the Jebo, becaue the price was just too good to be true.

I've got my jebo running, I bought 4 new 10,000k bulbs for 120.00 Canadian including shipping. My total cost is 260.00 Canadian. And now I have 2 spare bulbs to boot. With my 40 watt fluroscent I have 260 watt total. I am happy.

Ummm one dollar per watt? :p
