Nothing wrong with laterite, but all clay based additives have a high CEC (including kitty litter) and absorb nutrients.

I've only ever found the 55 oz packages for sale, so two of those would be about $40...still though, not bad. Cheaper than Fluorite sand, and it has the advantage that you can put whatever kind of substrate (or gravel, I suppose) on top that strikes your fancy.
