Are these fish more shy than other apistos? Because my male rarely comes out and then quickly hides whenever I move. The female only swims out if she thinks I'm not looking.

Awesome fish. I'm jealous. Apistos seem to come in two flavors. The species that spend all their time front and center, and those that are very skitish and shy. The shy ones will start to come around a little as they get settled in, but sudden movements will still send them running for cover. What's the setup? Tank size? Amount of aquascaping? Tankmates?

Dither fish will help if you don't have many. More places to hide might be in order as well (the more hidey holes a cichlid has, the less they use them).

29 gallon. Partially planted, but should soon grow in. There are 4 panda cories and 6 neon tetras. Today the male colored up very nicely and is coming out more so I guess the reason for hiding was becuase they were new.
I also noticed the male following the female and vibrating, is this normal behavior?

Totally normal, and better than the other possible "normal" behavior of chasing her around the tank and making her life miserable for the first week. Keep an eye on the cories. As the apistos settle in they may start to rough them up a bit. Good Luck.

How big are the caves that apistos usually spawn in? Does it matter?
