Today i went to a local fish auction and i purchased a pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides triple red. I put them in my 29 gallon tall. I have a lot of hornwort and some water lettuce in the tank. What are some good tankmates? or should i just have them in it if i want them to spawn?

If you want to spawn them, you'd be best to leave the bottom of the tank free of others, though you might be fine with some upper level fish like neons or rasboras.

I just look up that fish. They grow to about 3" so it should be okay for that size tank, but it says that they hunt prey every minute of the day. I might be wrong, but isn't that going to be hell for the neons?

I always found mine did better with some kind of small characin like cardinals in withthem. Pencilfish or hatchetswould be real nice too.

I found it made them a lot more active and visible. They did pick of a few fry though. The apistos always gave corys or other bottom dwellers a beating though. I would definitely do it.

I had cacatuoides and now panduros in my 29g. The apistos stay mainly in the bottom right where I have their caves set up, but they do venture over and torment corries in the other half of the tank every so often. The top third of the tank is a free zone. The apistos will chase anyone who drops down below mid tank, but will often rise to the top and hang out with neons and guppies whithout incident. If I had it to do over again I'd go with pencil fish and hatchets. Seems like less chance of fry predation.

i currently have guppies and mollies that i need to figure out a different tank to put them in so could i put some mollies or guppies in with the cacatuoides?

Neither of my apistos looks twice at the couple of guppies I have in with them. I can't speak to the mollies.
