Can blue rams live with other apistos ok? I currently have 60... Am working on upgrading to a 100. At the moment I have 8 blue rams. I'm hoping to get 3 pair and return the others to the LFS. Ill keep 2 pair in the 60 and te other in my 40, but I was hoping to.add some other apistos to the 60 with the blues. Is that ok? Or will everyone be fighting over territory? The tank is 48 x 20x 17, heavily planted with three very large pieces of driftwood. Any suggestions would be awesome. TIA

If you have 2 BR breeding pairs, there would no territory left for the apistos. Or it would be a chronically tense and stressful tank.

so 2 pairs is basically the agreed max for a 60 right? what if they dont pair up? I have 8 in there now... 2 look almost paired, one is a normal blue and the other is a much younger electric blue... everyont else kind of just hides, occasionally they ram at each other and then chase each other for a few seconds, but no one seems to really be fighting quite yet

whats a good dither for the rams? I have 6 serpae tetras i was gna add in? any others that do well with rams?

What you have fits for sure. I think I read somewhere that black skirt tetras are from the same region. But those are a bit beefy so it limits the size of the school . Not that the rams would mind, mine don't get stressed by other fish like my male dwarf rainbows who are pretty big and fast. They just don't care. I have rummy nose tetras with them as well, and a few Yamato shrimps. The rummy nose look awesome and the rams ignore them completely.

But I like a big school of fish, so the more the merrier. In order to not overload, I would go with a bunch of tiny slender tetras. I just added gold tetras in my other tank and they are stunning.

I"m a big fan of Harlequin Rasboras, these guys always look great. You're mixing continents, but these guys are hard to beat.

I would stay away from the blue tetra (Boehlkea fredcochui) and other fish of such psychotic nature who behave like they are overdosing on cocaine and red bull all the time. At least the dwarf rainbows calm down after a while...

Eggs survive every time now in my tank: the flat rocks are surrounded by rocks, wood and plants and are place in each corners. Makes things easier for them.

awesome! I ended up getting 7 more serpae tetras to make a 13 tetra school. Now they just kind of huddle together between my driftwood. I cant figure out if my lights are too bright, current from the filter is too strong, or if they just like to sit in a clump haha but everyone seems to be fine... I have 9 rams in there now, patiently waiting for them to pair off. They all get along great, very rarely chase each other, but they just wont pair and I don't want to keep 9 rams in such a small spot you know

I had 2 pairs of rams in a similar sized tank, heavily planted and lots of driftwood and to be honest it still was one pair too many. They were constantly warring especially when breeding and the tank had high stress levels even with rummy dithers. I removed one pair and things have calmed down. The brilliant thing with blue rams is once paired they will happily follow each other around and not quarrel. I bred apisto cacatiods years ago and found the same thing... One pair works best, I had a 8x2x2 with two pairs and they still neat killed eachother. Just my 2 cents.

Ya im finding this is slowly happenning in my 60. I am preparing to build an 8x2x2 next weekend, but Im not really sure what to do with them all. They still arent fighting but I think they are starting to stress each other out a bit. I woke up this morning to a pair sitting over a set of eggs :D but now thats only going to mean trouble for everyone else. So that is 9 total, 2 have paired, 7 to go, and no room for the others. I dont want to bring them back to the LFS really. The hope is that I can pull of 2 pairs, or a pair and a spare, in the new 8x2x2. Then Ill keep one pair in the 60, and one pair in the 40. That still leave 1-3 rams assuming I can get them all to pair off.

I have a good relationship with the LFS and he was who suggested to me to buy the 12 of them and return the ones that didn't pair off because with that many I would have a a better chance of getting pairs. I didnt feel comfortable with 12, so i slowly added 9, from both that LFS and odballfish. I just dont feel comfortable bringging them back not knowing if they are just going to be tossed or not. I don't think he would, but he also has new inventory and it is a business after all. Should I just find someone to rehome a few once they have paired up?
