I have the possibility of getting some apistos for my 29. I can get agassizi's, caucatuoides double red or orange flash, or panduro's. Which are harder to get, and how many could I put in this 29?
I'm assuming these apistos are going to be in the "29G - Oblongum pair, Odessa Barbs and Panda Cories" tank. What is the scientific name of the Oblongum? I can't find any info by just typing Oblongum. The O pair probably grows bigger than the Apistos so I wouldn't recommend having the Os and the Apistos together in a 29G. Although it might work with consideration on the oblongum pair.
Actually, I am finishing killing off an infection in that tank. Everything but the cories either died or were euthanized. It makes me very, very sad. The oblongum are Australoheros oblongum. They are the fish in my avatar, but that is a crappy pic. To really see what I lost, google it. They came from toddnbecka, and the first few pictures are of the parents.
And don't worry, they are not going into this tank right away.
I would see what suppliers in your area have. I'm lucky to have a very good supplier that gets many varieties of apistos. I have decided I wanted caucatuoides, and the orange ones were available first (getting them tomorrow yay!). I think the orange and reds are both beautiful.
Apistos are awesome!! I would just pick a variety that has nice colors, do some research, and go for it. I love the A. agasizzi's 'fire red', the A. caucatuoides 'triple red', A. borellii... they are all awesome though. Can't go wrong with dwarf cichs!
And for a 29, I would try to get a pair or a trio (one male).
I am planning to go to the LFS today to get a trio of the cacatuoides. I am thinking about getting the orange flash because I have heard that they produce all three color variants.
Sorry to here about you loosing your Oblongum pair. I've though about getting a pair for my gymnogeo tank but the tank is maxed out.
Anyway you really can't go wrong with apistos! I have a pair of borellii in a 20g and they are awesome! My lfs has agassizi "double red" and they are just stunning! Good luck!
