Yes, and tank layout certainly is a factor. The adults in my experience will aggressively defend "their" territory within the rock work without straying far outside that area. Even their own fry will eventually be seen as competition.

Yup I'll find out soon because one of my tank has that exact layout - one end with Julie Transcriptus and the other end Lamp Stappersi. Plants are blocking each other... This tank is going to be interesting soon when they become mature... :)

I guess my 55 gallon with 40 bettas is only 96% stocked?

Whats wrong with that? A 10g can hold about 6, so that means a 55 can hold about 36 so you're only overstocked by 4. but it's not like there's a rule that you shouldn't have over 6 per every 10 gallons.

forgot to say, it seems to work really good with small fish, but for larger ones it doesn't. Like it says that 6 angels and 4 senegal bichirs in a 180g with two Hagen fluval Fx5 is 80% stocked (I don't have those, just trying it out). I don't see how a 180g could already be 80% stocked with only 6 angels and 4 sens. Can't you have like 4 full grown angels in a 55g?

One problem I noticed with the Aqueon 20 is that you have it rated for a 15 gallon tank when it's rated for up to a 20 gallon.

Its actually rated "up to" 30g according to manufacturer with 125GPH flow rate. Once again, 15g is an educated guess based on the past experience with filters that makes such claims.

Moral of the story is never go with manufacturer-quoted numbers - they are too generous as far as filters go. :)

You may have a point here. 90% (or even 95%) of all feedback I got was based on small to medium fishes. I myself owned mostly small or African drift lake fishes which are typically not very big. Bigger ones may require further fine tuning.

In that particular case, Senegal Birchars are marked as 18 inches long. So they are the culprit, not angels. Profiles say this but does this make sense? Need more feedback on the species I didn't keep before.

Right. Not to mention for larger tanks, you can hold more fishes than the simple multiples you get by looking at the tank sizes.
