This has been my experience as well. AC filters do not siphon water, they pump it through an electromagnetic pump system.
 
Mine does not restart itself after and outage, I have to pour water in and use a thin object to kick the impeller going. I clean the motor and impeller regularly. Tank is always filled to the top. Other than that problem I love it. Power outages here are rare now a days.

I'm new here, just thought I'd throw my 2-cents in. I've had a AC20 awhile back, sometimes the impeller would stick after a water change, I have to flick the motor housing at the bottom to give it a "kick start," sometimes I have to use a tooth pick or something and manually turn it. But I also have an AC30 which I ran for almost 2 years and never had a problem like that.

I have a question though, sometimes after a water change, I'd have some water in the filter, but not in the tubing. When that happens, sometimes I just let the motor run and eventually (less than a minute), the motor would suck in enough water to fill the tubing. My question is, would that burn out my motor?...I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I think it's relevant :bowing:
 
I have aquaclears running on two of my aquariums and I have not had a problem to date with them when there is a power outage. We seem to have more power outages then some people. Around here they say we live on a bad grid so the power has gone out on a bright sunny day but then again we can have a raging storm outside and everything is fine. Weird.

I have three AC filters - 20, 30, 110. I have to clean the magnet cyclinder and the motor housing every 3 months to keep it from sticking. I also own a Whisper 40 that have never stuck in 2 years. However, I still prefer to use AC because of the better media holder design.
 
So is it bad to let the filter run dry and wait for it to eventually suck in the water to fill the tubing so it can work properly?
 
We just had a power outage again this morning that lasted two hours. My aquaclear filters statred right up without a problem.

If we had that much power outages, I'd go insane. I can't stand power outages for more than 10 minutes...my life revolves around electronics O.O
