AquaClear 30 Filter says, "I like to leak"

i have many ac, but the reason i don't like them that much is because the sponges catch larger debri, not the unseeums, so i use filter batting in all them, but i either put it under the sponge at the bottom, or above the sponge and then bio rings on top,
when using the floss, it traps more stuff, so needs changed faster than without,
but i want it to clean the water, not be easier on me, ...
so put the floss lower down and the bio on top always, and change often,.. the amount of water flow thru the ac makes them great but the clog faster with wool,. because of the flow rate,.. mine have never leaked but when needed to change the basket will try to float up,.

I have an AC70 on my 55 gallon, and after reading some of these posts I always feel so "underfiltered". It does an ok job on the tank, but am I missing something by not running a second one (or maybe an AC50 as a supplemental unit)?

Depending on your bioload, the AC70 is probably fine for your 55, but more filtration will keep your water cleaner and, if one fails, you're not without a filter. Also, with more than one filter, you can customize the media quite a bit to your needs.

Quick newbie question. The penguin filter I bought (biowheel 150) has the carbon pad insert. I don't like the idea of buying the new pad every 2-4 weeks. What could I put in the cavity to replace the carbon? Bio-balls? what else would you put in there. i would like something to keep out the nasties that eventually make there way into the filter pad. Your suggestions are appreciated.

This is what I used in my Emperor and Penguin. I bought mine at Petsmart. Just cut it the same shape and slightly larger than your cartridge. I usually ran two in each filter. Then you can alternate cleaning them. Don't throw them away unless they get damaged or too dirty. Just rinse them periodically.
