Aquaclear 30 Question

I have had an Aquaclear 30 on my 10 gallon for about a year, and I love it. But recently after I did a water change, I noticed that it is silent most of the time, but then it will get louder than normal for about a minute. It almost sounds like the impeller is rubbing up against something and having a hard time moving. Is there something wrong with it, or do I just need to clean the impeller? Also, how do I get it out? Finally, I was wondering for anyone who has the AC power filters, what kind of media do you use? I currently use 3 of the sponges and want to make sure this is okay. Thanks for the help!

try just cleaning it..... its really easy to take apart. you just pop up the plastic part. 3 sponges is fine.

When you do the water change does the water level go below the intake? at times if air gets trapped in the tubing it will make occasional noise.. I use sponge>floss>biomax

i use sponges and rings in mine. check your impellar housing, i have found moss and pond snails in mine which made it make a racket.
