I just got one of these. The original owner said it might not be called that anymore, but the pictures online of the 70 match mine..Anyway I'm curious as to how the filter media actually works since I'm used to just using a whisper... Also is the media oftenly sold in stores?
 
Yes its a very good filter, on what size tank is it going on ? the media is widely available in stores, but much cheaper online,......:)

It all depends on how many items you order if it would be worth ordering online, You could use alot of different types of media, filter floss, sponges ect, I use the AC sponge, carbon bag and bio max bags in my AC50, its up to you.Maybe eventualy add another filter like an AC50 for additional filtration, depending on your stock........:)
 
AC70 was known as 300 before. As far as media i would just get a sponge for the bottom, filter floss center and biomax for the top. All these items can be purchased from a lfs here for around $5-9 (depends if you need a bag of that filter floss) If you cant find it cheap localy then i can work something out and ill purchase them for you and pass them along to your cousin so he gives it to you after he gets off school.
 
ok, im going to have to look into this then, wispers still seem so much simpler lol...
how often would i have to replace the media if i went with bk's suggestion? can i just rinse it out well twice a month or must i replace it every month?
 
the sponge you can keep in there forever and just rinse it out in tank water every month. The filter floss i rinse once and next time i chuck it (so cheap to replace) the bio max i keep there forever as well.

I have a whisper 40 myself and i dislike it for one reason, the space for the media is just weak, not much you can do with it unlike the AC filters
 
I have yet to replace the foam or the bio max, Ive had that filter about a year, got it for a good price, free, the carbon i replace about every 2 weeks,.........:)
 
wow very cool then! i actually wasn't planning on getting this filter, but it came with the 30 gallon i bought, im glad i asked for the filter/heater!so i guess here is the plan, Songe then filter floss then biomax. As long as i can get all 3 in lfs im happy... no carbon cause my tank is planted.
