The foam part you would only need to buy once, at least not for a long time, the generic foam in the link looks like it would work, but iv never tried it, i would get the AC foam and bio max, as far as filter floss, pillow floss available at craft stores or big chain stores will also work, it usually comes in big bags which makes it cost efficient........:)
 
Agree w/ above. The original sponge & bio-max that the mfgr. supplies should last you a long time w/ simple rinsing. If for some reason you need to replace it the generic will work fine. My old A/C 500 (now 110), the next size up from your A/C 300 (now 70) never came w/ bio-max so I got http://www.petsolutions.com/BioModu...er-Filters-From-Imagine+I79271370+C10279.aspx a couple dollars cheaper but serves the same purpose. As for the carbon & or amrid pouches, I save them strictly for med / tannin removal or spikes. Using them on a regular basis can get expensive cause they exhaust quickly & need changing every 2-3 wks. for them to be effective. Save your money & use them for emergencies. "T"
 
Top of the line Filter, online replacement prices are much less then any store. Very good to have a bio bag from AC on top, sponge on the bottom and anything you want in the midle.
Rince once a month or as needed and keep going. Easy.
 
By the way I add extentions on mine so they sit lower in the tank. It is also strong enough to suck small fish, keep that in mind, you can put some plants in front.
 
I do sponge, thin layer of floss, biomax, second sponge in mine. Only clean the bottom sponge & rotate them. Just make sure it's level or ever so slightly tilted toward the tank. Very reliable although I have some whispers too.
 
the filter came with the extension, so i am going to put a cover over it since i have lots of baby shrimp in my tank. I ordered one sponge and a biomax thing, so im going to go to walmart or something and get some filter floss or pillow stuffing. thanks for all the replies everyone! -p.s. since when did aquariacentral have spell check on posts? or is it just my browser? (mozilla firefox)
