How effective is it? Is it just a surface for the nitrifiers to develop on or does it actually effectively remove ammonia? Is the biomax media any good?

It converts ammonia to ammonium I think which is less toxic but still useable. However, water changes are cheaper and get rid of excess ammonia as well.

It works, just not too cost effective. I would replace it with more spongs if possible.

Bio-Max is good. Works to build up bacteria. Itsent 100% needed thought. Just be sure to use tank water to clean it, if you use tap water all the bacteria will die.
