Setting up my new 55g Oceanic today I discovered that an AC 300 HOB filter would not fit. The rim of the aquarium was to thick. I managed to shave some plastic from the AC and it worked fine. Has anybody else had this experience. I broke the 2nd AC 300 when I dropped it while trying to modify it (#%$$#@ me off). Anyone recommend a good cannister filter that want break the bank? I was thinking about the Rena Filstar XP3.

You're not the first person to have that problem. I don't think Emperor's are quite as tight on their clearances. Sorry, I have no experience with Filstars... only Eheims and HOT Mags.

Is that the only filter you have on the 50 gallon tank? It really isn't emough filtration for such a large setup.

I would think two AC 300's would be adequate.
I have had the same problem with my AC 500 and even my Emp. 400 onmy 115. I just shaved the inside rim of the tank far enough to accomodat the filters. there was already a portion of the lip removed to accomodate filters so I extended it enough to fit my 500 and emp.
 
Sorry didn't see the second AC 300. Yes, of course that is enough filtration for a standard tank setup.
 
I had an old Topfin 60 which gives me about 300gph (according to the box) and the other AC 300. I salvaged the motor from the broken one. Anybody in need of a new AC 300 motor?

Yeah, on those Aquaclear's that tends to happen. Did you shave the little plastic tab that comes out from the box right near where the impellor sits? Thats what keeps it from fitting snugly. My opinion - if it doesn't fit at first, you can pretty much shave the whole thing off, you don't really need it anyway.
 
The first one I modified went great. I was holding the second one close to my chest with my left hand and shaving the plastic using a dremmel with the right when the dremmel caught in my %$#% shirt. On reflex I let go with my left hand. Kinda sounds like a penthouse gallery story!
