I am setting up a 24 gallon aquapod and I was wondering: is it nessecary to get a protien skimmer because the system has a surface skimming overflow intake system. Also, I read that having live sand and live rock can take the place of a protien skimmer( http://www.nano-reef.com/articles/?article=3 )

Yes, I have seen the fission nano skimmer. I am planning on having corrals and a few fish, about 3 or 4. Did you take a look at the article I lined to? It makes it sound like for a nano reef you'll be ok without a skimmer if you have a dsb and live rock. Will this work for my setup?

I have a 24 gallon Aquapod as well adn looked into a skimmer for a while. Everyone has a different opionion on them. I'm not running with one now, just planning on weekly water changes. If you search nano-reefs forums, there are a ton of mods for aquapods and setting up skimmers. I would suggest doing the credit card or cassette tap mod.

I just took out the bio balls and chemical bag and put about 2 lbs of live rock ruble in the chamber instead. I am still using one of the sponges (mine came with 2) and I rswitch it about twice a week with the unused one.

I don't have any fish or coral yet....I just finished my cycle, but I haven't seen any problems. Some people have put over a $1000 into moding their aquapod....I personally don't see a point in buying an all in one to do that!

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!!!
