what would be a good aquarium background for a tank with plants and black sand? either black construction paper, a diy 3d background, or a frost paint is what i was thinking. is there anyway to keep a diy background in place without the use of silicone?

I would shoot somewhere in between and do a "blue to dark blue/black gradient" background.

That's what I used on my tank with black gravel and light colored rocks, with a handful of plants.

Tape it on the outside :)

But seriously, silicone is wonderful stuff. Is there any reason you are trying to avoid it? Does the tank already have water in it maybe?

Black- or the 3d bg. I don't know if there's anything besides silicone to use. I like 3d bgs so if you want a challenge go for it! :)

I agree with J double R, make like the Rolling Stones and Paint It Black. But since you already have the tank filled, just use a plastic backgroundand if you can, use pam to spray the back first so the background looks darker.
