I am actually a member of three different clubs. American Cichlid Assoc., Pacific Coast Cichlid Assoc. and the California Betta Society. I also regularly attend meeting and auctions of the Silicon Valley Aquarium Society but haven't joined yet. I occasionally attend meetings of the SFAS but haven't attended since they lost their meeting spot at the Steinhardt Aquarium.
I HIGHLY recommend that if you have a good club in your area, support it financially as well as with your attendance. I happen to live in an area that is blessed with an abundance of clubs, but even here, if not supported they can fold and go away forever.
We meet in local fish stores mostly. sometimes the owner talks about the store and his back room setups, sometimes we plan the next auction or big function. Someone talked about judging fish at contests. A breeder talked about the fish he keeps and gives some out as door prizes. Sometimes a member will give away plant clippings.
You may find someone keeping similar fish as you but even if not you'll probably learn something from someone, between the fish and the equipment there's always a lot of conversation.
I wish...... long sigh, a bicycle ain't gonna get me from Walla Walla to Portland Or or Seattle Wa where the nearest clubs are. I do have a car but with wifes schedual like it is the chance of her having the weekend off is pretty slim. I keep agitating about to see if I can drum up interest in a club here but so far no luck.
I doubt there is anything like that in my area. Is there any way that you can check to see if there is? I would be interested in joining depending on what it was.
Most meetings are on about the same schedule. Reading of last months minutes; then discussion of any old business still left unresolved; then new business discussion. This takes maybe 1/2 to 3/4 hour but is always different. Next is a short break where we can look at the month's fish anyone can bring in from home called a bowl show. (we also vote on our favorite) Raffle tickets are sold for prizes on a donation table & 50/50 split tickets are sold. We usually have a guest speaker who talks about 45min or so. Then there is an auction of items members bring from home such as new bred juveniles & plant extras. Every year we hold a giant 1700 to 2000 item auction, fish show in local mall, have a Christmas party, summer picnic and an Awards Banquet where achievement awards in many catagories are presented. (All free to members I might add!)There is much more to it but this just gives a general idea.
I am a member of the Boston Aquarium Society, which meets at the New England Aquarium. Each meeting has a 50/50 raffle, a raffle for prizes, refreshments, an auction, a bowl show, and an interesting speaker.
