So my aquarium collapsed. I was eating supper and heard a BOOM. Ran to check it out and there was my aquarium all over the place and all 18 fish all over the floor. I have:

1 Gold gourami
2 Powder blue gouramis
2 platies
1 flying fox
12 neon tetras

I had no backup water so I snagged some tap water. Didn't let it run too long so it wouldn't be too cold. I saved all the fish except for 1 neon tetra. I couldn't find him and he suffocated before I did.

I spent all night shampooing the floor and cleaning water. Overall damage was an alarm clock and a TV that water got into. The TV was in the basement and the water soaked right into it. It's glitchy. I think more drying and some internal cleaning may fix it.

I have a new aquarium running and all the fish are in a bucket and fish bowl. As soon as the new aquarium gets to the proper temp, I gotta put the fish in. Poor guys. I've used tons of water condition ( the fish friendly kind that helps maintain their mucus membrane).

I hope they're ok. The tetras I can handle losing, but don't wanna. I'll be so upset if any of the others die.

I have to say that that sucks to have happen. :( How big was the aquarium and what sort of stand did it have? I just ask out of curiousity. I was at a LFS recently and saw a stand that looked interesting. When I opened it I saw that it only supported the two sides and one board in the middle for a center brace. This for a 125g tank. Somehow I didn't think it would do a good job.

Aww, man that sux. Yeah, so many of these aquarium standsare so flimsy, my dad brought me a rock-solid table for mine, he refused to buy one for the store.

Actually, from what I understand that's perfectly fine. The glass of the the aquarium is providing the actual support. You'll notice that the molding on the bottom of the aquarium keeps the glass bottom from touching the stand anyway. I believe the tops of the bases are cut out that way on purpose to allow for sumps and/or to keep water from collecting between the tank and the stand's top and rotting it out.

Acrylic tanks are a different story though.

Edit: Sorry, used wrong quote the first time.

that's a shame about the tank. I've never had one collapse, but i did have a 20L once spring a leak. A crack appeared overnight and I awoke to low water in the tank and a spurting leak. That was a fun emergency. Hope all your fish make it through that stressful event.

The aquarium was actually on a shelf on a desk. The desk collapsed. Very unexpected. No reason to. Anyways, last night I lost another tetra. This morning when I woke up I lost 5 more. So here is my list now:

1 Gold gourami
2 Powder blue gouramis
2 platies
1 flying fox
12 neon tetras (7 died, 1 suffocated, 1 disappeared, 5 died overnight)

I'm not happy. Tetras I can handle, but ALOT have died. Like I said I hope the big fish don't. The aquarium has been running and is getting warm. Still not ideal for fish, but what can I do.

On a side note, my platies had 10 babies last night in a fishbowl.

one time i saw a deuce bigalow and the tank he was baby sitting smashed and all over the floor...

HANS! lol, sorry to steal the thread but I LOVE THAT MOVIE!
hehehehe made me sad too. such a waste!

anyways. sorry about the tank man, thats one of my worst fears. there is supposed to be a big earthquake to hit vancouver one of these days and i know my bedroom and the whole basement will be flooded if it does. :(

PS- and the gourmaies might be okay. they have a labyrinth organ that lets them breathe air, so they will have been able to last longer out of water. although, it still is just as stressful on them.

Well they're all back in the tank now.

The gold gourami and platies started swimming like mad.
The powder blue gourami's swan to their safe spots, but seem ok.
The fox was white, but is getting dark and getting his stripe back. He's chilling on some plants.
All the tetras found a small spot and hid. Funny though they still kept their school.

Overall, the fish look pale but after what they've been through that's expected. They're getting darker fast. I'm gonna crank the heat and do frequent water changes for about a week. Here's hoping.

Just an update. Everything looks normal again. Saw some ripped fins, but those will heal. Temp is rising nicely. I think I'll prob lose another tetra though. He looks good, but isn't swimming with the school, just hiding.
