Aquarium Collapsed

I always have at least 1 neon tetra that will hide for awhile away from everyone else. But I have rarely lost one that wasn't direct aggresion from a tankmate.

I've only lost one to an unknown reason.

Of course cycling a tank with neon's is probably a clue.

Tomm10,

Just to get back to it. The stand for the 125g had no support along the entire front or back of the tank. Only the two sides and center. That is the entire bottom rim of the tank wasn't even supported. You can get a stand like that, but I'll stick to one that appears a bit more sturdy.

Yeah THAT sounds a bit wrong. I've seen plenty that have giant holes cut out of the top but the edges and center have always had plenty of support.

Doesn't sound like something I'd trust. :shake:

Filter - I realize your tank disaster is old news, but I am wondering how many gallons it was as I was considering putting a 35 gallon tank on what I consider to be a very sturdy, rock solid desk...but maybe I shouldn't risk it.

Thanks.

I recently made an old tv stand into a dual tank stand. (hooray for dumpster diving!). it was the kind where the tv is built into the base and then the top is like a flat table. it looked really sturdy and the top of it is about 2 inches thick, but after only a couple days my 10 gallon started to make it warp. it is made of particle board which is a lot weaker, so i slipped a big piece of 3/4 plywood under it and it's been fine. until i got this i had been using regular old nightstands (very stocky ones though) with no problems.

if you want to use "found" furniture for tanks, i suggest something that has the legs or supports fairly close to the sides/corners of the tank, if not perfectly fitted. that way more of the weight goes directly down through the legs to the floor instead of on the table top. one problem with mine is that the sides of the stand are about 8 inches too wide on each side. if the table is not made of a hard wood or plywood (and even if it is solid wood) i would still recommend getting a piece of plywood to put on top. it will distribute weight more evenly and is pretty tough. some hardware stores like lowe's will cut the wood for you if you bring in your measurements.

a 35 gal. tank will weigh over 280 lbs just with water.
