Aquarium heaters

OKay I picked up a 250W Stealth Heater for my aquarium. It seems to be holding temp where I want so that's cool. I have another simple question to ask. I decided with this heater to change its mounting location. So I mounted it horizonatly about an inch below my spray bar. I though this would allow for some decent circulation. Better than in the corner anyway. My spray bar is set to spray across the top of the tank and is about 24" long.

Any opinions would be great.

that's a great way to do it. I usually do the same. Either under the filter outflow or with an airstone underneath (if I use an airstone). You're right, it does help distribute heat evenly.

I'm about to get a Stealth myself. I heard there's a trick to mounting the suction cups? Did you run into a problem with that?

I wouldn't say a "trick" but putting the suction cup brackets on the heater is a bit hard. I slip mine up from the bottom. They are definitely tight fitting around the heater though.
 
oh, that's pretty much standard. From what I read, it made it sound like you had to fit the cups into special grooves in the heater itself or something. But if they're just cups that fit over the housing, that's like any other heater.

Maybe that person wasn't very, um, mechanically inclined? :o It was in the Drs F+S print catalog.

Yeah, I don't like those. The cheapo Whisper heater that came in my kit had this stupid clip that had these tight holes for the cups to squeeze into. I never could get 'em all the way in. They were constantly half in, half out :D I have since replaced that heater and just keep it around as a backup.

Could anyone recommend anything, I'm desperate. This is Canada and it's starting to cool off here.

Do your ebos have a blue knob on the top? If so, you just push that knob up and reset the dial to the temp it is keeping the water at. Never had problems with my ebos - 10 yrs +.
 
Yep, tried that. Played around alot with that. See, there wasn't really any rhyme or reason with these heaters. Some just kept heating and heating and some kept a certain temp that was outside of the range. But if the tank is at 80F and the heater is set at 65F why would it turn on? The LFS I bought my heater from even tried one in his tank, set at 75F right out of the box, didn't touch it. It held temp at 82F. That sure as hell isn't +/- 0.5F. So, that is 4 brand new Ehiem Jager (Ebo) heaters I've witnessed malfunctioning.

the thing is, I don't doubt for a second that the "EBO" heaters were/are good. But I've heard alot of stories from people that claim they have gone to **** since Ehiem took them over.

I talked to my friend at Big Al's and she said that their salesmen stopped recommending them to people because they have had so many returns. They have complained and complained about it to Ehiem, so hopefully they do something.
