When the noise of the HOB filters bothers me I top the tank off until its filled to the rim. I don't use air pumps so the only other noises I ever hear from my tanks is the clicking of loaches or the bang of a cichlid knocking a heater around.
Mine is only 6 gallons with the bio-wheel and I CANNOT hear it at all! Unless I have my top off.
I like the sounds of water, though -- we have a place that is 15 feet from the lake and I even put a pond on my patio to hear the water noises when the water is still!

i cant even hear the person next to me when i listen to music much less a tank 3 rooms away. but i did realize how much i missed the sound of all the water movement in the tank room when the power went off for a few hours. it was just too silent.
Air pumps are probably the number one cause of noise regarding aquariums. Second would probably be a filter that has some problem either wearing out or some other problem with it-?
I have not been bothered by low constant noises but sometimes those pumps can make a lot of noise and we must fix them or adjust how they are hanging or sitting.
