when i got a 30 gallon tank i moved 1of my 2 filter to it and all the water in the 10 gallon. i didnt want to mix the old gravel so i left the 10 gallon outside and all the ornaments in it. after about 2 days i went back to it and holy it smells worse than anything i ever sniffed. i attempted to clean it but the stink wouldnt go away. i will plan to fill it water and then vacuum the gravel. after i would put the filter on and change 100% of the water everyday. would that help? any ideas would be helpful

you could try the water changes everyday. that would be a good idea. make sure to not put any chemicals like cleach in there because no matter how many times you have rinsed it out it will still be there and it will kill your fish (if you put more in your ten gallon). i had the same problem. just do water changes. it will take a while but it is the safest way to do it without harming your future fish.

What happened is that the bacteria living on and in the ornaments died...and dead bacteria stinks. Try soaking the ornaments in baking soda and water overnight, then scrub gently with a soft brush (not too hard or you'll chip paint) under warm water. That should help with some of the odor.

Do you use either Amquel Plus or Prime as a dechlor? They both have a temporary horrendous sulfur odeur (discussed a month or two here) and seem to be absorbed into certain deoration materials. Fish don't seem to mind.
