are there any aquarium plants that doesnt need any special substrate, low light, and doesnt need any co2/supplements?? i want to make my 20g high a planted tank THANKS!!!
i already have some java fern.

Also here are some low maintanace plants and are considered low light. But almost all plants need fertilizer

Water Sprite
Any Cyrpt
Almost any Anubias will grow anywhere
and Finally Vallisneria spiralis (Tape Val, or Jungle Vals)

Also get yourself a bag of Playsand, just wash it well and there you go. It isnt "special substrate" but it gets the job done.

Cryptocorynes, Java Moss, Java Fern, Anubias, Bolbitis Fern, Pygmy Chain Sword, Dwarf Sag, Sags, Vals and all. If you don't fertilize your tanks, I'd probably stay away from heavy root feeders such as the bigger swords and all, though it could work.

What does playsand do that's different from his/her gravel? I don't think there's any "nutritional" value in playsand, lol.

Plants need to be fed. End of story. No nutrients = no growth.

You wouldnt look for a fish that you didnt have to feed because we all know its impossible. All lifeforms need some form of sustenance.

yes, but that does not always lead to adding extra fertilizers.

in many tanks plants can survive with current stock levels and nutrients added by fish / uneaten food. so it is partly due to stock levels.
a tank is just plants and no fish would need special consideration.

;)

All Im saying is, in my experience, using only tap water and fish food and fish waste leads to deficiencies.

Though you may not need to add the quantities that a fully blown high tech planted tank needs, tap and fish waste/food does not contain all necessary nutrients for optimal plant growth. The more plant mass you have the faster they strip nutrients out of the water column.

OP stated they wanted a planted tank. Not a fish tank with a few plants. Anything with more than a few plants will need ferts. Starting off on the right foot will lead to a higher level of success in the long run. Besides, ferts are cheap and take all of a minute to add to the aquarium.
