I just bought some more Lace Rock for my aquarium (needed something with some more hiding spaces). I have had no problems with the other pieces. I soaked each of them prior to putting them into the tank. However, this piece looks to have some moss on it... does anyone know if this will harm my tank and its inhabitants? I'm soaking it in tap water as we speak. Anyone know if this will be a problem?

I don't think so. It's been sitting in the store for about a week now. No one that knows where they get it could tell me. The moss looks yellow, red, and gray. It's pretty dry and brittle. I would think soaking it thoroughly would solve any problems.

Sounds more like it could be lichens rather than moss. If you pull off the lichen, (or scrub it off) is there a mushy muddy area underneath it? That's because lichens dissolve rocks and live off of the nutrients they get from doing that.

I bought some lace a couple months ago with lichens on them.....I just soaked them in hot water, scrubbed them and that's all I had to do. The balas and the silver prochilodous did seem to be picking at the rock when I first put it in, but whatever it was they were eating didn't hurt them.

Socal,

I took your advice and did some "web-search" and that's what they are. I boiled it and scrubbed it. Not all of it came off but they certainly aren't hurting my fish. Thanks!!!
