Does anybody have green slate rock in their tanks? I just bought two large pieces from Feller Stone (they sell rocks for aquariums and terrariums) but I just want to make sure it'll be okay in my tank.

Does it affect ph?

Thanks in advance,
Serg

BTW, did anybody go to the Pet Expo at the FairPlex this weekend? I just got back and I was horrified by the kids aquarium building contest. All I have to say is.......convicts........10g..........rusty metal........bad.

I knew that, lol. I guess I was just trying to see if anybody had already done it.........call me lazy (I always do) lol.

Here's another one for you.........I bought two large pieces of lace rock, but they have lichens growing on them. I'm soaking them in hot water right now, but I can't seem to get them off with scrubbing, and I'm worried about them destroying my water quality. What do you all suggest?

Also, I'll be putting them in my 180g community, which has clowns in it.

I know the lace rock will buffer the ph, so should I add once piece first, then the other a few days later? I want to prevent a stressful ph swing.

TIA again,
Serg

I also noticed that the green limestone, flakes off small pieces very easily. My small pieces of grey slate don't flake at all (I guess it's possible that the grey ones aren't slate).

The four big rocks (two lace, two slate) came out to $8, so I guess it's not a huge waste of money if I don't use any of them, but I wanted a larger cave for my clowns since the hole in the driftwood is getting cramped (they grow slower than an oscar, but they don't grow that slow).

Almost any igneous rock will be safe for your aquarium as they tend to be composed of very stable elements. I use granite in my tank and it looks great. There's mica speckled throughout the rocks so it looks like I have gold dust or something in my tank. :)

I just brought home some mica-filled rocks from Colorado for my refurbished 20g and have been thoroughly pleased with them so far. have you noticed any fish trying to eat the mica though?

My corys flip upside-down and seem to be eating something on it, but the rocks have been in there for two weeks and everyone is alive.

I can't imagine that'll hurt anything. You might get it to decompose but then you're just feeding the plants. And maybe an alge eater will like it?

What about the lichens growing on the lace rock? Anybody have ideas? I was able to scrape most of them off after soaking it in hot water, but there's a blue type that wont come off.

Buy a small cheap travel toothbrush, submerge the rock in warm water for 15-30 minutes, then use the bursh to scrape the lichen off (if it won't come off let the rock sit in water longer or use a harder brush). This should also remove most of the roots and prevent the lichen from doing anything harmful in the tank (although I'm can't imagine it would anyway)
