I have gotten lost on conversions on how much I should use. I bought a 16 oz. 454 gram box of aquarium salt. i originally started to dose using the instructions on the box/one table spoon per 5 gal. i am figuring 50 gals but then read more is needed. i doubled the amount which i believe brought me to 20 tablespoons which i think is 60 teaspoons. the next day i added some more before work in a hurry and i think it was 10 more teaspoons. i want to add more tonite but i want to be sure i am not over dosing or under dosing. my question is with this size box of salt if i add the whole thing which would be where i'm at tonite w/ this dose is this too much? or is it too little. because i sort of lost track of exactly how much i put in i'm wondering if anyone knows off hand if 454 grams or16ozs is about right or too much/too little for 50 gals. i have what is about 10 more teaspoons left should i put it in and will i need even more tommorow

i just found a coversion that says 48 teaspoons = 1 cup, so if i add the whole 16 ozs i should be at about 2 teaspoons per gal. does this sound right?

I just found a good conversion site if i add the whole box i should be at 95.68 tablespoons which would put me at about 2 per gal. so im going to add the rest tonite. do you think 2 tsp per gal is good or should i buy more tommorow?

16 oz = 2 cups
1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons

If adding 16 oz to 50 gallon tank, you would be at slightly less than 2 teaspoons per gallon.

I've already had this discussion here a while back but I'll say it again just because it worked. My tank had ich a year ago. I followed the dosing instructions on the box of Dr. Wellfish's aquarium salt for treatment and raised the temp. My tank no longer has ich. I believe the recommended dose on the box is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. I also increased my water change schedule (2 25% changes a week with additions of salt to maintain the recommended level) and did a fairly deep gravel vac each time. I'm not interested in discussing the merits of the recommended treatment because it worked for me so there's nothing to discuss. I'm just posting my own experience for your consideration. Treat whatever way you feel comfortable with. Just remember, most aquarium fish are freshwater fish. They don't like salt, that's why they produce a thicker slime coat in it's presence. Prolonged exposure to salt can be damaging to them. The less you need to use, the better.

You can use regular table salt...no need for the aquarium salt. 2 teaspoon per gallon. Start with 1/gal over 4 hrs, do another round of 1/gal after 8 hrs. Dissolve the salt in warm water first, adding a little bit every 15-30 min.

When you do water changes, be sure to dose back up for what you have removed.
