Aquarium Salt for new fish

Only a couple of varieties of freshwater live bearers fish actually need/like salt. The rest don't want or need it unless treating Ich or other parasites.

So, short answer is "No, don't use salt". A cycled filter and clean water is all they need to be happy.

When I get fish in the mail I just acclimate them slowly and then introduce them to the tank. I never needed to use salt. I'm sure others will chime in with what they do.

No live bearer needs salt that is a fw fish, nor do they like it. It does nothing for them. They do like hard water, some fish such as mollies can be kept in brackish conditions.

Remember there is a difference between salt (NaCl) and salts..

i must agree with blue here, if stress is a worry get stress coat, salt isn't the answer

use a cycled tank and clean water to combat stress.

Oh how the religious war of salts begins...

I suppose I should have been more specific to avoid it... I keep mollies and swordtails in lightly brackish conditions 1.003 SG using marine salts.... some people classify them as freshwater fish, some classify them as brackish fish... depends on how they are defining brackish... i.e. some define brackish as 1.010 SG up to full sea water, and others define brackish as any added salts.

Mollies and swordtails enjoy very hard water which marine salt makes. The NaCL portion of the marine salt has a detoxifying affect on the nitrates.

I wasn't suggesting the use of Aquarium salt at all, only for treatment of parisites...

;). I see no war here, simply us both talking about the same thing and my clarifying salts instead of salt.. its good for users that are not familiar, and even for us seasoned ones, to know exactly what you are talking about when referring to salt or salts.. It can be confusing..

Now its time for the real war to start when the users that go by the myth of adding aquarium salt to there tank is somehow beneficial for the fish as a routine practice..
