aquarium salt...opinions please

about signs, i also read varying tank requirements all the time. Man, all i know is use common sense. I dont put in 5 oscars in a 10 gallon. or a basic pleco in anything less than a 75 but the stores have 10 gal as min for some and 50 gallon min for others. Its all a sham. Also the worst of all time advice is about 2 amateur employees who told me oscars must be fed feeder fish. i couldnt believe my ears. sure ill feed them feeder fish if i want to see a nice hole in their head. wow lfs really is all about $$$$

if you do want to use salt make sure have a good test kit for it. at work we have to keep the salinity (using aq. salt not marine) at .20 so a lot of times the fish are used to having that salinity. if you do use salt its true that you would want to replace it after a water change, but only replace as much as needed to raise the salinity to your established lvl. (like, you would want to add "i think" 1 tbsp for a 5G tank, but you wouldnt want to add 1 tbsp when you do a 1G water change in that tank)

No offense spirals, but I really don't think you should be advocating the use of aquarium salt in a freshwater aquarium. I know that may not have been your initial intention, but I don't think we should be giving advice when it comes to using salt like it's a water conditioner. It's a remedy for a variety of freshwater illnesses. That's it. And I think overuse of it is why many LFSs loose a lot of their stock when it comes to certain species.

I'm beginning to feel that this was the culprit of my mysterious fish kill as well. I would add aq. salt (via instructions) at every water change. Wondering if my salinity got to be too much for everybody with the exception of my neons which were my sole survivors.

Thanks so much for all of your replies and the constant information all of you give! I love my aquariums and really appreciate that I have a place to go for answers!!!
