Aquariums without hoods ... safe?

The coverless tanks look really great but I wouldn't take the chance with evaporation problems, water chemistry changes, and jumpers. It just doesn't seem worth it to me for aesthetic value.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a few questions:

So, let me see if I'm getting this right.

If you're going to use a real glass lid, you should use a thick piece because it won't break or shatter as easily. Does that mean it's safe if you're putting a light hood, with no fans but some heat release holes, directly on top of it with two 60 watt cfls?

Or is Lexan better with that kind of light set up? Would it warp from the heat?
