Are fish intelligent?

Scientists often equate the quality and extent of parental care an animal provides as being one indicator of intelligence - if so, then I would think many of the cichlids would rank well in intelligence, relative to other fish. It is also very possible that intelligence is relative from species to species, and how we measure intelligence may not capture true intelligence among other species. I'm sure many of my fish that come to the front of the tank to be fed everytime I walk by are sure I'm mentally deficient when I only respond to their begging once or twice a day.... ;)

Even single cell organisms can show a response to stimuli ...

Answer me this: What's the difference between a conditioned response and intelligence?

-Having the sentience to understand the difference between failed redundency and successful repetition.

I myself have noticed how my cichlids (x2 cyphotilapia frontosa, x1 lamprologus brichardi) hide when someone unfamiliar enters my room. I believe it to be some form of minor intelligence. Yes, it is possible that a change in the environment could be the answer to this therefor reflecting a conditioned stimulus, but I simply believe it to be otherwise.

they cant be classed as ''human smart'' but i have to agree that some fish are dumber than others.cichlids are accepted a smart .lots of others are not. my opinions is that they were given the neccesary instincts or ''intelligence required to survive''.they cant show feelings like love or hate but still show more intelligence than a lot of people that i know.

After a little reflection- more accurate to say that fish are more intelligent that 49% of a sub-population of Americans.... And if youre one of them you outta start watching FSTV of LINK instead of the nightly non-news report.
