Are Golden Mystery Snails illegal to own?

Yeah, Whatever. Thanks for you help Wycco.

:)

I did open this thread meaning to help- but since everyone had already answered I figured I'd be more usefull by exposing the dark underbelly of snail-fighting.

That actually doesn't seem so far fetched with some for places I've been to.

Anyhow, it is a good idea to learn how to distinguish canas from briggs/diffusa. The former is illegal to transport across state borders and will eat your plants. Visit applesnail.net

Arrrk! Arrrk! Arrrk!

Depends on the intent of the snail as to it's legality. Just like it is illegal to own a dog for dog-fighting purposes.

In some backwards areas people will put two snails into an aquarium and taunt the snails with jibes about how easy their mothers were and how many eggs they laid all over the place.

Crowds of people will them gamble, drink, and chant "Jerry... Jerry... Jerry..." whilst waiting for the snails to fight.

These snails arn't like your typical snails though- they've been bred and trained from an early age to be vicious- brutal and murderous... occasionally one will even approach the other for reasons other than to mate.

The last snail to die is considered the winner- and the frantic crowds will then settle their gambling debts and dispurse before the police arrive.

I'm also in Indiana and the pet store that I go to from time to time told me they could not buy any pomecea diffusa from me because you now had to have a permit to leagally sell them. He said the outfit he gets his from has a different permit and species card for every type of snail they have. Apparently this is a new thing, as he said it just started this year. First I've heard of it. Not to mention the only pet store to have mentioned anything about it from the 6 I visited. I don't even know where I would go to check his claim. DNR?

Actually, almost the opposite is true. Up until this year permits were needed to ship Diffusa/ Bridgesii across state lines. I think it was December, 2008 the USDA did away with the permits. So now they can be shipped/ sold by anyone.

Well I am for sure going to scour every day for egg cases from now on. I had around 50 snail babies from the one case I missed and I dont want to have to deal with this again. Is there a humane way to euthanize unwanted baby snails? I dont think I could ever do it but just curious.
