I have heard that they are supposed to be kept in full strenght SW when they get older? Is this true. In a large tank would mono's and GSP get along? Do people run protein skimmers with these fish?

I am also interested in mono's. Does anyone keep these fish anymore (did a search and not much discussion about them)?

My understanding is that GSPs start off in light brack water, and must slowly be bumped up to full marine by the time they are adults. This is the ideal way to keep them, so I hear.

Also, they are vicious and are not compatible with other fish.

I kept my GSP with a punch of other fish and had NO issues.
This is what my tank used to stock.

Tank 1 - 150 Gal. SG. 1.012
5 Argentine Monos 4"
5 Sebae Monos 4" (6" head-tail)
2 Red Scats 2.75"
1 Green Scat 4.5"
1 Silver Scat 4.5"
1 Green Spotted Puffer 3.25"
1 Figure 8 Puffer 2.75"
2 Orange Chromide 3.5"
2 Green Chromides 4"
1 Archer 4.25"
1 Tiger Fish Coius undecimradiatus "Dat" 4"
1 Silver Tiger Fish Coius quadrifasciatus "Silver Dat" 3.25"
2 Leaf goblinfish Vespicula depressifrons 2.75"
1 Mangrove Red Snapper 2.75"
Salinity is at 1.012 (at the moment, range 1.005 - 1.018)

How long did you have this set-up running? By "used to stock", do you mean it no longer holds these fish?

A 3.25" GSP is only about halfway to full-grown, so things may take a turn for the worse once the GSP gets older. Or, you might have lucked out and got a mild-mannered GSP...

Someone is bound to question the longevity of this tank, so I thought I'd jump in and try to be polite about it. ;)

Yes, check with pufferpunk.

In a fully marine tank, LR should be fine but don't expect too many creatures living on the rock to not to become pufferfood.

Puffers (green spots) and Monos should both be kept in full salt as adults. I keep Monos, currently have 3 Sebaes (waiting on getting more) and an Argenteus (he never played well with others :) ). All 4 are in full saltwater and the sebaes are still juvies. I keep lots of true saltwater Puffers and Triggers and you are pretty much required to have a skimmer. They will only work in high brackish through saltwater however. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

My protein skimmers working fine at 1.008, has it's own dedicated air pump though... get lots of orangey goo collecting at the top. But then my pufer eats like there's no tomorrow!!

Am looking forward to mine geting to the SW stage... will be some time though. I thought you would be ok housing with some bottom dwelling fish which can shift fast if they need to, like gobies or something.

Just don't get too small of gobies or other BW fish as I heard puffers will eat anything they can fit into the mouth!

Cute little guys but scary... :D
