Well when you ask about canister filters, you're basically going to get everyone telling you to buy the brand they prefer. It's like saying you want advice on a certain kind of car; everyone will have an opinion.
My opinion is that Fluval or Filstar offer the biggest bang for the buck, run silently, are easy to maintain, and even look kind of nice. Also consider that since they're very popular, finding any parts you might need will be easy. I use a Fluval 104 on my 20 gallon Asian blackwater. It does a great job with the peat filtration.
But of course, that's just my opinion. I can almost guarantee that others will swear by Eheim.
All canisters by these brands are great products, so it really just comes down to personal choice. Though I would avoid the Magnum canister (Not the HOT, the actual canister) as when compared to the others, it simply doesn't offer enough in flexibility, it's expensive, and it's a bit harder to maintenance. It's an older design and I've heard from the grapevine that Marineland doesn't plan on making it much longer.
