Nope, personally I think it's better not to, assuming you are referring to terrestrial soil as opposed to specific aquarium soils.

It's going to depend on your plant choice, and if you are going to need to do anything for their nutrition or not. good root tabs can be easier than using soil.

I use sand only as well :) if you have snails, their poop mixes with the sand and makes a nice fertilizer. Plus you can add root tabs under the more demanding root feeders if they are struggling and won’t have to go through the hassle of a dirted tank.

All my tanks are dirted ? Personally they work amazingly for me and I love them, but doesn't sound like a popular method lol. Once I went dirted, I never went back haha! I'll admit, you have to learn about them tho and how to work with them. But my plants LoVe dirt!

Most plants love dirt, because of the nutrients in it.

Most aquarists hate dirt because of the potential for a dirty and muddy mess of the water.

It can work, and it can work well. But most any of the serious aquarium plant people I know would rather spend money on good aquatic plant soil rather than used capped dirt.

Any individual who has seen a photo of a rich, verdant arrangement with a school of gem like tetras knows the magnificence of a freshwater planted aquarium. Be that as it may, numerous specialists abstain from including live plants, accepting they are excessively delicate or too hard to even consider keeping. In actuality, most live plants are solid and require almost no upkeep if the best possible precautionary measures are taken.

Planted Aquarium:

By keeping away from the absolute most normal missteps through cautious arranging and a little planning, you'll be satisfied with your prosperity. The most widely recognized purposes behind the loss of oceanic plants are expected to:

The expansion of plants that require varying water parameters (incongruent species)

The expansion of plants illsuited to the current lighting conditions

Water parameters:

Much the same as fish, live plants do best when they are kept in an aquarium that best suits their requirements. Choosing live plants that share normal water parameters will limit issues and will make it simpler for you to keep up perfect water conditions. The three fundamental viewpoints to consider are pH, water hardness, and water temperature.

pH - Most live plants are open minded of a pH extend somewhere in the range of 6.5 and 7.5. In any case, some touchy plants have a smaller pH resilience so it is essential to look into the particular pH necessities of each plant.

Water hardness - Usually communicated in level of hardness. In spite of the fact that tropical sea-going plants will in general favor milder water, most plants can adjust to harder water conditions (general hardness). By and by, look into the particular range your ideal plants can endure.

Water temperature - Though most oceanic plants do well inside the temperature scope of 70 to 80 degrees, there are a few amphibian plants, for example, Anacharis and Japanese Dwarf Rush, that incline toward cooler water temperatures. Discover the specific temperature prerequisites of each plant first.

This is the strange thing about aquarium plants.
People have absolutely no problem getting fish without getting the tank cycled, incompatible species, tank too small or even a bowl, overstocking and what have you, that's all not an issue at all. But let's take plastic plants... those live plants might die !!!

Meh, it depends on your choice of plants & animals. I always like some live plants. I'm not sure they're less work, just different work...I like a low maintenance tank...To each their own idea of "work"...
This is what it's all about. You can make the tank be what ever you want. My planted tanks are actually less maintenance in terms of weekly/bi-weekly maintenance.

My tanks with plants have ordinary gravel and see no ferts, CO2 or additives added to the tank. We're talking nothing fancy in terms of plants. I keep various crypts, anubia, swords, java fern and moss. My 55gal gets overgrown with anubia and crypts to the point I have to pull some. The 55gal has a 48" Current Satellite LED that I've had going for 4-5yrs, 8hrs/day and my other tanks have a mix of fixtures with ordinary LED bulbs threaded in.

Keeping up a Planted Aquarium

Keeping up a Planted Fish TankAfter setting up your planted aquarium, the subsequent stage is to build up a normal upkeep program, as you would with any aquarium. Supplement dosing, cutting, water trades, manual CO₂ framework activity and channel upkeep must be done all the time. You'll have to set up day by day, week by week and month to month schedules to keep your showcase flourishing and putting its best self forward.

Recently Settled Planted Aquariums: What's in store Initially:

During the initial scarcely any weeks
– and even months, in bigger tanks – your planted aquarium will be attempting to discover balance. This isn't generally a smooth procedure, so it's critical to be patient and let nature follow through to its logical end if things don't go entirely immediately. You may get a little green growth development, an out of control ooze or fluff may develop on your preferred bit of driftwood, or the water might be somewhat cloudy or have an earthy colored tint because of tannins from driftwood. Try not to frenzy or resort to intense activities like tearing the entire tank down and beginning once again. Every one of these things are typical and happen to loads of others. Try to comprehend why they're occurring and realize what to do – or NOT do – to get yourself and your aquarium through this stage.

Green growth – Green growth episodes are normal in recently set up aquariums. Planted tanks can be significantly progressively powerless in light of the fact that we normally utilize high-yield lighting, we're dosing manures and as a rule, we're likewise including CO₂. Green growth love every one of these things! Since new tanks are in a condition of irregularity and the plants haven't began outcompeting them yet, green growth can increase a decent footing. On the off chance that your light has diminishing capacities, bring down the power until the green growth disseminates. On the off chance that your light can't be darkened, decrease the quantity of hours it's on every day. Decrease the measure of fluid composts and CO₂ entering the aquarium and include snails or green growth eating fish, for example, Otocinclus to help control green growth.

Driftwood – Numerous aquarists experience a white to grayish film or "hide" developing on recently introduced bits of driftwood. This is typically an organism (however some of the time microscopic organisms) and is innocuous to you and your fish. You can evacuate it with a toothbrush, however it might restore a couple of times before vanishing for all time. Another choice is to prepare or heat up the wood or absorb it a gentle dye arrangement. On the off chance that you pick the detergent technique, flush and absorb the wood new water and fix it outside in direct daylight before returning it to the aquarium. Nerite snails, Otocinclus and bristlenose plecostomus are referred to eat this shape also. Maintain a strategic distance from the utilization of synthetic medicines, as they may have sudden reactions.

Overcast Water – Shady water is another normal event in recently set up aquariums. Plant-explicit substrates or dry supplement added substances can make the water overcast when you fill the tank, however once in a while this is on the grounds that the rock wasn't washed completely or only a characteristic microorganisms blossom. By and large, the water will clear all alone after some time with great filtration and reasonable stocking and taking care of propensities. Adding additional carbon to your channel or a microscopic organisms starter can help accelerate the clearing procedure, however carbon may likewise expel plant supplements from the water. Show restraint, feed sparingly and don't include any new fish until the water clears.

Earthy colored or Tinted Water – An earthy colored tint is extremely basic at first with specific sorts of driftwood that discharge tannins into the water. This is gainful to plants and fish from the Amazon Bowl and numerous pieces of southeast Asia, as tannins lower pH and hardness. All things considered, a few specialists feel it brings down the style of their aquariums. The tea shading will disperse inevitably, yet visit little water changes and the utilization of additional carbon in the channel will help accelerate the procedure. Heating up the wood likewise assists filter with trip tannins. Maintain a strategic distance from the utilization of compound medicines, as they have little impact and may have unforeseen symptoms and get more information from mr review expert.

Plant Pressure – Plants experience pressure, particularly subsequent to being moved starting with one condition then onto the next. Run of the mill indications of stress are leaves biting the dust or bundle plant stems decaying. Cryptocorynes are infamous for totally crumbling inside long stretches of being re-planted. Show restraint, when these plants adjust to their new tank, they will typically recuperate. Indeed, even Sepulchers that seem to vanish totally will return as long as the root framework is flawless! Trim soft stems off pack plants and replant the strong areas.
