Are snail supposed to just drop off side of tank?

According to applesnail.net, thats normal behavior....

In the wild, the snails will be climbing up on reeds, grass what have you. Bird or other prey appear, and snail drops into the water, then digs into the mud bottom.

Are snail supposed to just drop off side of tank?
I noticed my snail will be moving up the side of the tank then he will just drop off and fall to the bottom. Is this normal?

When I had a 10 Gallon tank, it had an air diffuser about the lengh of the tanks shorter side. The snails would constantly crawl to the where the diffuser was burried under gravel and then take a ride on the air bubbles!
