Came home today to find this going on between my Spixi and Brig. Don't know whether the Brig was supposed to be dinner orthe Spixi was "Lookin' for love in all the wrong places." Anybody know about the aggression level of Spixi's? I have heard that they eat their young. Snail gurus, are you out there?

Looking for love. LOL

Depending on how much Marisa is in them, they can eat other snails. Pure ones should be peaceful though.

A question from the snail novice-- Does the shape of the snail change if is a cross breed between Spixi and Marisa? Do the shells become flatter or change angle? Other than asking the original breeder, how does one tell?

Turned out it was a crisis averted. Not loving. Not feeding. Just a prolonged traffic jam moving at a snail's pace :)

In the early generatoins you will see a shell difference, as the marisa genes become more removed, its basically impossible to tell.

Hybrids look like regular Spixis. There was some mention about differences in the width of (or between?) the stripes of pure and hybrid ones, but I'm not sure how reliable that is.

The best way to tell them apart is just to observe if they eat plants.

Thanks, snail gurus. They're not snacking on my real plant (small and lonely though it is, since I prefer the extra, extra low light plants from Penn Plax,) so I guess the spixis are the real deal. I learn so much on this site, and I really appreciate your input.

The hybrid spixis apparently have a much flatter spire than the pure ones. I found that out in terribyrant's thread in applesnail.net when she first discovered the crossbreeding possible.

Thanks, Lupin. Makes sense considering the general shape of the two snails involved.
