Are there any alternatives to aquarium stands?

I'd like to buy a 10 gallon aquarium, but I don't really like the "official" aquarium stands generally sold because they are a little too low for my taste (average is 28" high, I'd like it about 36 inches or so)...Are there any alternative pieces of furniture that would safely hold the weight of a 10 gallon set up (I think it would be about 100 lbs)???

thanks
:)

I have my 10g and my 2.5g on my kitchen counter :)

Just a thought,

With research and decent woodworking skills, you can build your own stands. It may be a long and arduous process, since you have to make sure evrything is perfectly levelled. But, on the upside, you can have the way you want it, and usually for a bit cheaper.

Use milk crates :) you get that nice ghetto look.

When I was younger, I kept a 10g and a 20g on my dresser top.

Whatever it is, you need to check to see that the weight is directed safely to the floor, for some furniture is such that nails actually hold the weight put on the surface. And be sure it can take the water spills with out disintegrating, like pressboard will.

a ten gallon tank will weigh 100 pounds including the weight of water, gravel, filters and etc. anything that will hold a hundred pounds will hold a ten gallon fish tank.

you can pretty much put it on anything that is big enough and will hold the wieght BUT make sure where your putting it is level or the tank will crack

I have my tank on an old computer desk, I don't think it really matters as long as whatever you put it on can hold the weight.

FWIW, I have a 10, 6 and 2 gallon on a stand built for a 55 gallon. It's a good 3 feet tall. Got it at PetSmart.

Using an aquarium stand is kinda nice cuz it comes with tanks in mind - like open areas in the back to stuff wiring or run tubing or whatever. (Mine's against the railing by the stairs, which works out well - I go part way down the stairs to get at what's behind the cabinet :D - but if you had it against a wall, you could go through the cabinet to what's behind (like an outlet).)
