Are there any snails that will not breed without...?

Hi All,

I am in the planning stages of a 75 gallon Planted tank with Angels, cory cats, white clouds and swordtails. I was wondering if there are any snails that do not breed unless their is another male or female in the tank. I do not want to be overrun but I like the idea of 1 snail in the tank. As it is I am continuely picking out pond snails from my current Eclipse 12 and Baby Biorb. They came in on plants. Hopefully I will not import any pond snails into the 75 when the time comes.....

The mystery snails (aka brigs or apples) you see at stores require a mate in order to breed. You might look for smaller ones just to be sure they aren't going to lay eggs after you get them home.
 
No, not all "mystery snails" eat plants. The species Pomacea Bridgesii are very good and stay away from plants as long as they have enough other things to eat (algae wafers, shrimp pellets, fish flake food etc). I raise them and have never had a problem with them eating my live plants. Also, that species requires a mate to lay eggs, however, if they do lay eggs, they lay a large extremely visible clutch of eggs ABOVE the water line, and they are very easy to remove to prevent hatching. :) All in all, they are you ideal snail. They grow to the size of a golf ball. I have some if you're interested. They are small now, almost the size of a BB (BB gun pellet). Mine are blue.
 
Thank you all for your quick responses. I will look for the Mystery Snail (Pomacea Bridgesii) here in Alaska. Maybe at Petco or The Reef. I am definitely interested in the blue ones for sale :) How would that work with shipping to Alaska? Or would it? Kathy
