I picked up two cories 7 weeks ago and yesterday I noticed eggs on the tank wall. There are several batches of eggs in different locations around the tank. Are they Cory eggs? I also have Black Skirt Tetras in the same tank.

Can someone also help me ID my cories...are they bronze cory? My cories seem kinda dark to be bronze cory, no?

Thanks....PJ

Yeah, I'm just unsure if the cories are Rabauti or Aeneus. It didn't say when I bought them.

But yeah, I'm so excited and can't wait till they hatch...

Yep those are cory eggs. Try and move them into a berthing tank if you want them to servive. after a day or so if they're white they're unfertalised and should be removed for the sake of the fertilized ones. Don't worry if they're all unfertilised though. You mostly have to do specific things such as lower the temp and mimic a heavy rain before the corys start fertilise them. Them laying is a sign that they're in good health. If you don't want them to lay at all then ease of on the proteins (blood worms etc).

p.s. looks like an Aeneus to me. I have 3 myself and they look exacly like that. I think Rusty corys have their dark strip a little higher up the bodies, so it ends just above the eye.

I appreciate the feedback.

So, if I understand you correctly, even though the eggs are laid, they may not be fertilized? I have read that if I want to remove the eggs from the parents, I should remove them 24 hours after they have been laid. Is this to ensure that they have time to fertilize the eggs? And this is assuming that they have not been eaten within the 24 hour period!

I presume so. never heard anyone say you need to wait 24hrs. but that souns like a good idea to me. i've also read that it's good to add a few drops of methylene blue to the water with the eggs to prevent the development of fungus on any unfertilised eggs and the contamination of the healthy ones.

good luck! keep us posted

Just a note of caution if you don't have another tank set up. If you are going to use one of those breeder things that hang on the inside of the tank, do not use the plastic kind, go for the netted ones that you need to put together. OR If you have the plastic one already, let the eggs hatch in that but remove them and place them into the netted kind before their egg sacs go away, otherwise they will get through the holes in the plastic ones because they will be smal enough and more than likely be easy targets as snacks.

Thanks for the heads-up. I did get one of the plastic ones that have an additional plate that can be added to the bottom. That plate has got tiny holes, but I didn't know that the egg sacs go away before they hatch. I guess I'll have to get the netted one....

In anycase, out of the 100 or so eggs that were laid, I was only able to save 10 of the eggs. The rest were gone after 24 hours...I guess the parents were hungry! But the 10 eggs have turned to a brownish colour now which means that they are on their way to hatching, right?

no, sorry for making that more confusing.... they will hatch with their egg sacs attached. But after a coupe of days, the sacs will run out making the babies smal enough to fit through the small holes in the plastic breeder..... this is a problem I had. It's before the eggs sacs run out that you need to move them to the netted breeder.

It's more likely the tetras ate the eggs.... I never had any of my cories snack on any of them. Since they have turned a brownish color, you are looking to have some babies in a couple of days :D
