Are they 'pets' or 'animals'?

If you keep the animals recreationally (e.g. not farm animals or something like that) they are your pets. Why would you not want to call them pets? "Pets" doesn;t mean "love them like widdle babies", it means "accept the responsibility to look after their health and welfare".

Any critter that interacts back with me, I consider a pet. Domestication of an animal may be a key factor as well, except that most companion birds aren't domesticated, they're just tame.

But just because I don't consider my fish pets doesn't mean I don't provide them with the best care possible. =)

Yeah pets, I don't name them untill I know that they are NOT going to die, like when I get them from LFS I make sure they are doing ok first. I also don't let myself name the fry because then I HAVE to keep them LOL. I usually just play favorites with the fry hehehehe :D But I do cry when they pass away....

Pets. If you keep animals, well, they fall under your responsibility which means they will be considered as pets.

This is precisely how I look at it. Once they fall under your care and rely on you entirely for every need to be met, they ceased being just animals and became pets.

I named my dog, but I've never named any fish I've had. Not out of fear of them dying, but just haven't, even after some being around for 10+ years.

^ I agree. Most of my animals I consider pets. Anything that really reacts to me I consider a pet. My only animals are my wolf spider and my salamander.

All of my pets are animals. A human pet is really entering a moral gray area.

Is one any less responsible for animals raised as food than for animals raised for companionship? By this definition Tyson is the largest pet owner in the world.
